After 15 weeks of declining unemployment claims, the Department of Labor has reported a recent surge in unemployment applications, rising to 1.4 million in the last week. The increase in the number of workers seeking aid correlates with the increase in COVID-19 cases as several states begin to shut their business doors again, shrinking the pool of available work further. With the enhanced unemployment benefits slated to expire this weekend, lawmakers will have to visit the possibility of extending unemployment aid at a lower amount.
